It all started in the Fall of 2013:
My inspiration for this project began with an article from the September 2013 issue of Young Children, a journal of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. The article, found on page 32, is titled The Natural Playscape Project: A Real-World Study With Kindergartners, written by Uchenna Ogu and Suzie Reynard Schmidt.
Inquiring professionals seek change by posing questions, 'wonderings,' and collecting/analyzing data to gain insights into their 'wonderings'. We read relevant literature, make changes in practice based on new understandings developed during our inquiry, evaluate those changes, and share findings with others.
I wondered whether I could incorporate authentic learning (ouch, sometimes that phrase can be annoying!) with my kindergartners using an outdoor 'woodsy and under-developed' space on our school campus?
Where would my Kindergarten students direct me in this learning adventure?
My inquiry had begun. I invite you to join me (us) on this journey.
